Edmonton

Drive out to the Elk Island National park this morning.  West of Edmonton and through the huge industrial area dominated by oil refineries for miles on both sides of the roads.  It is obvious why the local Ice Hockey team are called the 'Oilers'.  Ran into a flyin-flyout oilman this afternoon, just back from 48 days 'in camp', was looking forward to 7 days off then into it again....good luck to him, he says he has a pretty good bank account!
Interesting drive through the Elk Island Park...there were no elk and it is not an island.  It is however Canadas' largest enclosed National Park at 200 square kilometres.
We did tick off a couple more Canadian animals - the Bison, the first one we saw got us very excited, by the time we had driven the hour through the park we realised they were fairly common and very tame.  Also came upon a couple of coyote feeding on some road kill.  They were a little more frightened of us and we were lucky to get a photo.
Came back into Edmonton and explored the Downtown area till well into the afternoon, came back to the motel for a little rest before we hit the streets for a big night tonight.
Made it to tea and home by 9.30...living dangerously I know!!

Bison along the road.

Bison on the run, just lucky they didn't come our way.

Coyote interrupted having lunch.
Council chambers in Edmonton with a pyramid roof, reminding us of something/somewhere else.

Churchill Square with the unusual roof of the Art Gallery in the background.

  1. I know what you mean about the animals and how exciting it is to see the first one. We were the same with the squirrels in Hyde Park London, then got sick of them. Same as the quokkas on Rottnest Island - we were bursting to see one, then they were just everywhere and we were sick of stepping in quokka poo!
You must be exhausted by the day's end - you just fit so much in in your day. Way to go. Have fun xoxo

  2. We still have a long list of animals we have to tick off. Pam thinks we will have to go to the zoo in Vancouver before we come home. We do pace ourselves for a full days activity and we are sleeping VERY well. We just need to do about 4 hours more exercise per day so we can neutralise the calories we consume each day....easy!!!! Love Vernon and Pam.
