To Vancouver Island

Left Whistler his morning.  We woke and looked out the window and the snow had fallen further down the mountain.  The locals will be licking their lips.  It was however, overcast and rainy when we left and it stayed that way most of the day.  Despite that we had a beautiful drive down the highway to Horseshoe Bay.  The road runs alongside the mountains on one side and the Pacific Ocean inlet on the other.  It was a bit like driving the Great Ocean Road but without the Victorians, and the Twelve Apostles, and the dry sandy landscape, and....well...you get the picture.  It was all rocks and fir forests until we got to Horseshoe Bay where we caught the ferry across to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island.  A two hour ferry trip where we walked the decks and watched the mainland disappear from one end and Vancouver arise out of the gloom from the other end.
There was a light rain about but no wind so it was very pleasant on the way over. Arrived at Nanaimo about lunch time and had a bite then headed south for a couple of hours to the largest town on the island, Victoria.  Booked into the motel in the centre of town then walked around the city centre till it was about beer time, found a pub next door to the motel and had beer, wine, seafood chowder and chicken wings for tea. (Cath...you'll be pleased to hear....NO calories)
Home to the hotel and planning a busy, sunny, dry day for tomorrow.

Horseshoe Bay.

Leaving the mainland.  The cloud seemed to reach down and wrap around the trees like cotton wool, makes a very special effect in real life I can assure you!!!  The other ferry heading back in.

Ready to leave on our sea adventure.

Arrgghh, love life on the seas!!!

  1. Been following your adventures and it seems the fat lady is getting ready to enter stage right. See by itinerary that you are going to Burchart Gardens...similar to mine really !!! We loved Victoria. You have seen plenty of snow by the pics, makes for great photos.
See ya when home. Travel safely.

  2. Thanks John, we have been trying to push the thought of home from our minds....thank you so much for reminding us of the fat lady. Had a great day at the Butchart gardens. As you say, so similar to both our gardens. The only thing I'm lacking is the Quarry Garden....I've decided to get the shovel and wheelbarrow out when I get home to rectify this anomaly. See you in Aus soon. Vernon and Pam
